A little introduction about who I am and what brought me to where I am now! I am a mother of 3 strapping boys (hilarious as I’m tiny, which they like to remind me of), I love crafts of all kinds and like to challenge myself to try something new on a regular basis. We live in an amazingly beautiful area of South West Wales on the side of a hill overlooking Merlin’s Hill (yes the wizardly kind of Merlin) and the Towy Valley and have done so now for just over a year.

Believe it or not but my Fiancé and I came to being smallholders entirely by accident, it’s not something we had previously aspired to be or something that was even on our list of ‘wants’ for our future! However, a few years ago I started to look a little more into what we were eating as a family, particularly because I have Crohn’s disease which means eating right is of utmost importance so I decided it was high time I took more responsibility for what was going onto our plates, not just because of my health but also because I have been acutely aware for some years that animal welfare doesn’t always rate highly on the agenda when it comes to mass produced meat.

We began with the humble chicken, as anyone who keeps poultry knows, chicken math follows no structure, we went to collect 3 little bantam hens, and came home with 6 hens and a cockerel! This was closely followed by a small flock of loud, insanely comical runner ducklings. Then thoughts turned to particular breeds, would just any duck or chicken do? Were there birds out there that were in decline? Could we maybe keep more than just birds? Should we rent land and actually keep some livestock? Is so, what? And so it began.

We are now 5, almost 6 years on from that first crazy chicken moment, and boy has life changed. In that time we moved not just ourselves, but a herd of ( now) 35 goats, a herd of 7 cows, the chickens, the ducks, the 30 rare breed sheep, the pony, the 5 farm cats and the collies 240 miles from the East Midlands to our sanctuary in the welsh hills. We rent approximately 60 acres of lush welsh conservation grazing (helping to preserve the frittilary butterflies and a number of species of bats!) and hope to expand our rare breeds, starting with our first rare breed cow very soon ( an Irish Moilled cow and calf from our friend Lyn Arrowsmith). We have had disasters, some, catastrophic and awful, some that we could just stick a plaster over and worry about later, we have laughed till we cried, cried until we could laugh again, had some amazing moments of sheer joy and total and utter wonder and one thing is for sure, we wouldn’t change it for the world. Forever an adventure that I hope never ends.
