I, along with my husband and two wonderful children, have a small smallholding in the woody wilds of mid/north Devon, where we keep two native ponies, four crazy goats, countless chickens, ever increasing Muscovy ducks, two hilarious guinea-pigs, and four beautiful dogs.

We attempt to grow vegetables each year - with varying success; almost always losing brassicas to caterpillars or goats, gaining many green tomatoes, and enjoying hilarious carrots! I seem to have a knack with herbs; and am learning more and more about how to use them for our own, and our animal's, health. Foraging is a favourite family activity, with a mini ancient pear and apple orchard on site, and wild blackberries, elderberries, hazelnuts, field shrooms, wild garlic, chamomile, sloes, nettles and lots more growing in abundance around us throughout the year, which we try to utilise nutritionally and medicinally.

As a family, we are thoroughly enjoying our immersive rural life; filling each day with as much nature, wildlife and smallholding as we can. I fully advocate this way of living; particularly for families, or for those living with chronic and mental illness - which we have experienced too. This way of life can be as therapeutic as it is challenging, and both give huge rewards!

In addition to our smallholding home life, I am an artist and photographer with a particular interest in animals and nature. My photographic series, 'A Bird in the Hand' explores our relationship to our native wildlife; it was exhibited in Belfast, and is set to feature in China's biggest photographic festival and at the Royal Ulster Academy of Art. I also paint original art and take commissions largely based around nature and animals found "on the farm". Art and smallholding go hand in hand as far as a therapeutic lifestyle goes, and I completely believe in celebrating our wonderful animals through the expressive power of art, as well as promoting smallholding and a connection to our beautiful countryside.
