Liz Wright was born in Isleworth which then was Middlesex. Her mother worked in a market garden throughout the war – Isleworth and Heathrow (now famous for something quite different) was the centre of Market Gardens in war time. Even as a small child Liz wanted to farm and as a 6 year old handed in a project about farming including hand drawn photos of cuts of meat. Thankfully her mother fell out with her aunt and they flounced off to North Bucks to the rural idyll as it was then, Olney, near what was then the tranquil village of Milton Keynes. They had no money but within months, Liz had a pony and without a mobile phone, managed to survive riding miles alone with her Exmoor pony getting to know the countryside.

At 22 she went to work for a grain company and became a ministry crop inspector but she was already earning money out of free lance writing. By 25 she was a grain trader for a big grain company in Fenland where she still lives and by 30, at last a smallholder with three acres, old buildings and a passion for livestock. She was also editing Smallholder magazine. She edited Smallholder for 30 years before moving to Kelsey Media where she edited Sheep, Goats and Alpacas which became Smallholding magazine. She also edited Fancy Fowl for a number of years, where she learnt the history of poultry which is still a major fascination for her.

She wrote her first book about Ducks and then continued with some 13 titles on poultry and smallfarming including two coffee table books, Beautiful Ducks (that had an Edinburgh Fringe Show based on it) and Beautiful Horses.

Now in her early sixties, she still has her smallholding and with her vintage tractor mad partner, has Muscovies, peacocks and native ponies plus a garden of course and divides her time between editing Smallholding and Practical Poultry. She is also very keen on donkeys and is associated with The Donkey Sanctuary and is interested in donkey behaviour. Her great love is cats, and locally people think of her as the crazy cat lady as she also volunteers for Cats Proctection. Her aim is to write a book on the history of WW1 and WW2 told entirely through the pages of The Smallholder Magazine.
