Website     Facebook     Feature: Why keep rare breeds?
I am the chairperson for the York RBST support group which covers from South Yorkshire right up to the Northumberland border. I have kept Manx Loaghtan sheep along with horses, waterfowl and poultry for over 30 years and in the last 10-14 years have added to that with Irish moiled cattle, British saddleback pigs and another four breeds of sheep, Boreray, Devon & Cornwall Longwool, Shropshire and Badger Face Welsh Mountain.

I have just started keeping Golden Guernsey and Bagot goats too. All these breeds have very specific qualities.

I run my farm on my own and sell most of the meat direct from home, I sell the wool and other products and also sell pedigree breeding stock often in the form of starter Flocks . The premise I work on is ,'you have to eat it to keep it' and also firmly think that our rich diversity of breeds need preserving not only because of our heritage but also because the genetic pool from these breeds will ensure we have a healthy national flock/herd in the future as they carry immunities that will surely be needed.
