Being a smallholder: Community and Well-Being

Many of us take up smallholding to get away from our previous busy, 'people-centric' ways of life, prefering the slobber of pigs and the nibbling of goats to the thought of a night out with the glad rags on. People are still important though, and for many of us, being part of a smallholding community can often be a lifeline when things aren't quite going to plan: awkward kiddings; broken down vehicles; flooded barns; to name but a few, very real and unhappy events. And then there are the difficult decisions situations: sending off your first stock for meat, having to euthanize a poorly animal, dealing with a predator attack.
Knowing other smallholders go through the same experiences, frustrations, successes, worries and otherwise can be hugely consoling and affirming! Both online and off-line communities can be equally supportive: e.g. facebook groups (such as Celebrating Smallholding UK Facebook page), village/ local agricultural shows and fayres, the neighbours, local smallholding groups and societies and more.
Smallholders should never feel they cannot ask for help or support, or show off their latest success, be it a perfectly marked lamb to a bumper crop of onions. We hope this page will offer inspiration and support as well as helping everyone get the best from their own smallholding community!!!

We welcome contributions from other smallholders so if you have articles/advice/tips to share, please get in touch by email jack@celebratingsmallholdinguk.org.uk
